Spanish club Real Madrid announced the conviction of a fan who racially abused team striker Vinicius Junior and Villarreal player Samuel Chukwueze in two matches in Mallorca last year and sentenced him to suspended imprisonment.
The assailant, whose name the Spanish club did not mention in its statement, was suspended for 12 months in prison after submitting a letter of apology to Vinicius and undergoing a rehabilitation period to combat discrimination.
Real Madrid said: “This is the third criminal conviction issued in recent months due to racist abuse directed at Real Madrid players.”
He added: “Real Madrid will continue to work to protect the club’s values and eradicate any racist behavior in the world of football and sports.”
The abuse occurred against Vinicius and Chukwueze at Son Moix Stadium in Palma, the capital of Mallorca, and two weeks separated the two incidents.
Fans could be heard in a video calling the Brazilian player a monkey during Mallorca’s match against Real Madrid.
The player publicly and frankly condemned racism in football matches in Spain.
The club said that a boy who racially abused Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Chouamini in April this year also apologized and expressed remorse.
The boy was banned from entering stadiums for a year and will participate in educational activities proposed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office and pay a fine.
