“After the fall of this Reich, The great fear and sadness of the Third Reich will no longer be an indictment. But maybe it will also be a warning”wrote his author, the German actor Bertolt Brecht. From 1935 to 1938, he wrote 24 sketches, of different lengths, as well as several movements of the same musical work. The common thread: the destruction by Nazi ideology and the brutality of the daily life of society and individuals. From morning to evening and from evening to morning.

This is a couple who are afraid that their own children will blame them for their lack of nationalism; the judge is stuck in his doubts and contradictions; a Jewish woman who decides to leave an unsafe Germany; a harmless game that will not be blamed for the person who participates in it; violence against those who dare to notice that food is more and more, more and more expensive; or even a meal that is disturbed by the arrest of neighbors “Who are you looking for”

Lack of relief

At the Théâtre national de Bretagne, the director Julie Duclos has chosen 13 of these paintings which are placed in an unpretentious and beautiful workshop-like decoration lit by large glass roofs. Characters and situations follow each other without any interruption, their words and their silence with audio or video punctuation, subtle but gripping.

Where is the overwhelmingly peaceful, even disturbed, attention of the viewer when faced with one of the darkest chapters in history? If the horror norm of events is terrifying, the text (or its interpretation by Pierre Vespérini) often lacks relief and tension. The grayness is also drawn to meaning, carefully but without real effect, by a group of actors going from role to role. We hope that the announced long journey will allow them to gain weight and intensity.

Until October 3 in Rennes then travels in Brittany and throughout France until 2026 (from January 11 to February 7, 2025 at the Odéon in Paris).
