“Fatah Sharif Abu al-Amine, the leader of Hamas in Lebanon and a member of the movement’s leadership abroad,” was killed in an airstrike at his “home in al-Bass camp in southern Lebanon,” Hamas said in a statement.

The leader’s wife, son and daughter were also killed in the strike, the organization said, calling the incident a “terrorist and criminal murder”.

Lebanon’s official NNA news agency reported the strike in Al Abbas, near Tire, saying it was the first time the Palestinian refugee camp had been attacked.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a secular left-wing organization, earlier reported that three of its members were killed in an early Monday morning strike in Beirut’s Kola district.

Lebanon’s official Palestinian refugee camps were established for Palestinians who were expelled or fled their homeland during the 1948 war that created Israel.

According to long-standing arrangements, security issues in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon are left to the Palestinians themselves.
