Complaint to CAS for ‘positive for banned substance’
Sinner: “I’m disappointed with this unexpected measure.”

Jannik Sinner (23, Italy, photo), world number one in men’s tennis, tested positive for the banned substance Clostebol in a doping test during the Indian Wells Masters tournament in March this year. The retest result 8 days later was also positive. The Indian Wells Masters is a tournament known as the ‘fifth major tournament.’

Sinner explained this by saying, “The spray the physical therapist used to treat his fingers contained clostebol, and the ingredient entered my body while giving me a massage.” As the International Tennis Integrity Organization (ITIA), which determines the level of disciplinary action against professional tennis players, accepted this explanation, Sinner’s disciplinary action ended with him being deprived of the prize money and ranking points he received for advancing to the semifinals of the Indian Wells Masters.

Afterwards, there was a backlash that ‘Sinner received preferential treatment because he was ranked number one in the world’, and eventually the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) decided to take this issue to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). WADA said, “We determined that the ITIA ruling that Sinner was not at fault was incorrect. They announced on the 28th (local time), “We believed that a 1-2 year suspension from competition was necessary and filed a complaint against Sinner to CAS.” If CAS sides with WADA, Sinner will not be able to compete in the future for the period of the corresponding disciplinary action. In response, Sinner said, “WADA’s actions are unexpected and disappointing.”
