The seventh edition of the Serial Killer television series festival began this Tuesday in Brno with a screening of the Czech crime drama called Studna, filmed by Tereza Kopáčová for the Voyo platform. The novel returns to the family tragedy that took place in 1968 in Vonoklasy near Prague and became known thanks to the processing of Major Zeman’s 30 cases in the communist series.
The six-part Well tries to map what preceded the murder in Vonoklasy, what followed it and what were the motivations of the actors. The authors have been watching the story on the screen for almost five decades. They begin in 1932, when the soldier Standa starts courting young Maria at a village dance. The script was written by Miro Šifra and Kristina Májová, the main roles were played by David Švehlík, Johana Matoušková and Filip Červenka.
“We are mapping 50 years of the story of one family, from which the perpetrator and the victim were born. We investigated why this happened. Everyone knew the end, we decided to tell from the beginning,” says director Tereza Kopáčová.
At the Serial Killer festival, Studna represents Czech production in the Prime Time Killer international competition, as well as another new project Daughter of the Nation, produced by the Canal+ platform in co-production with Czech Television. This comedic period miniseries deals with the life of Zdenka Havlíčková, the daughter of Karel Havlíček Borovský. It stars Antonie Formanová, Jiří Langmajer, Vladimír Javorský or Robert Mikluš. The public will see it already this Sunday, while in the case of Studna, the Voyo platform has not yet announced the premiere date.
Czech creations are also represented in the section of short series of Central and Eastern Europe Quick Killer. The choice fell on the series Actually nothing happened, which will soon appear on iVysílání. It tells about the creation of erotic content on the Internet and the phenomenon of the OnlyFans platform.
The festival focuses on quality television production. The festive evening was held in the Goose on a String Theatre. By Sunday, the organizers will present 40 screenings. Everything is accompanied by the TV Days conference intended for professionals from the field, this time also supplemented by a Friday public debate dedicated to television journalism in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
“In the coming years, Serial Killer will focus on a wider spectrum of genres than just drama series. Contemporary television journalism is of course a big topic that we want to give space to,” said festival director Kamila Zlatušková.
“I am very pleased, without it being our evaluation criterion, that in addition to the increasingly high quality of all this year’s assessed competition series, more and more women, and therefore also female protagonists, are appearing in the best titles in key creative professions. This trend is quite obvious compared to our first years, and thanks to this we are starting to compare the pace with world productions,” adds Zlatušková.
