“Weeks of truth” await FC Basel, as the next matches will all be against significant opponents. The Basel team will enter this critical phase of the season with a decidedly poor feeling: against FC Lucerne, the team concedes a late goal and loses the pivotal match with 0:1.

The match in the sold-out Lucerne swissporarena was characterized by high intensity throughout. The most active phase was in the first 20 minutes, where Fabio Celestini’s team seemed dominant, and Basel could push forward repeatedly. However, the tide soon turned. The quick Lucerne players began to create offensive chances, forcing FCB goalkeeper Marvin Hitz into two superb saves in the 27th minute. Just before halftime, Hitz again kept the score at zero after a shot from Villiger – without a doubt, he was the best Basel player on the field up to that point. As often happens when two combative but tactically disciplined teams meet, the first half ended with no goals.

The second half continued in a similar manner until FCB coach Fabio Celestini seemingly shocked the swissporarena with a memorable decision: in the 55th minute, he substituted the committed but largely unsuccessful Xherdan Shaqiri. Shaqiri reacted with a look of astonishment – before he had to make way for Marin Soticek…

The match remained just as intense, but Lucerne began appearing more frequently in the Basel half. Eventually, it was the twelfth corner that would bring the winning goal. Rrudhani delivered the ball to Luca Jaquez’s head in the 78th minute, who headed it past Hitz into the net. That small misjudgment was the only blemish in an otherwise outstanding performance by the Basel goalkeeper – but it was consequential.

FCB visibly sought a reaction, yet consistently lacked genuine goal threat. Throughout the match, the Basel team managed only a single shot on target. This is likely to trouble Fabio Celestini as the tasks ahead will not get any easier: while Lucerne now looks down from the top of the table, FCB will host reigning champions YB at home in Joggeli next week.

FCB was long in the match but nevertheless leaves as losers here in Lucerne. The winning goal came in the 78th minute from Luca Jaquez after a corner. A more detailed match summary will follow shortly.

I will take my leave here, thank you for reading along and have a nice evening!

The match is over! Lucerne defeats FCB 1-0 and takes over the top of the table.

29.09.2024, 18:27

Can they still equalize?

29.09.2024, 18:25

The FCB goalkeeper is not bored today. Even in stoppage time, it is more often the Lucerne players who are pressing.

29.09.2024, 18:22

Six minutes are being played.

29.09.2024, 18:20

Schmid brings the ball to the center, but the ball is lost among many legs and the chance fades. Only one ball has the FCB brought to the Lucerne goal so far. Now, however, Soticek, Traoré, Carlos, and Fink are all on the field, and they want to change that.

29.09.2024, 18:17

He arrives too late against Traoré – the game is getting rougher…

29.09.2024, 18:16

Fink hits his counterpart with the elbow: That’s a yellow card.

29.09.2024, 18:14

Ottiger comes on for Stankovic. Of course, the Lucerne players are now taking their time with every action. Only a few minutes remain to play…

29.09.2024, 18:13

Celestini responds: He brings Fink on for Vouilloz. A striker comes on for a defender – a clear sign from the FCB coach.

29.09.2024, 18:11

And then Hitz is beaten nonetheless – and he looks instantly unhappy. Rrudhani takes the twelfth corner for Lucerne to the center, Hitz advances and leaves the goal. But Jaquez is quicker in thought and heads in: 1-0 Lucerne.

29.09.2024, 18:08

A powerful header from Grbic, the ball almost over the line – Hitz rushes in and deflects the ball away. What a save. But the Lucerne players keep pressing…

29.09.2024, 18:05

Frick reacts promptly: Löfgren and Spadanuda are now in the game, Knezevic and Villiger have finished their day.

29.09.2024, 18:02

Celestini clearly wants more than a point: He brings Carlos on for Ajeti and Mendes for Kade. I’m curious if the former successful ex-Yverdon striker can bring new dynamism to the Basel attack.

29.09.2024, 17:57

Suddenly it’s lightning fast: Ajeti cannot chase down a through ball, but the ball lands with Traoré, who can shoot freely while FCL goalkeeper Loretz is out of position. The Basel player, however, cannot find the net – that could have been the leading goal.

29.09.2024, 17:54

Now Mario Frick also intervenes: Owusu and Klidje leave the field, Grbic and Winkler join the match.

29.09.2024, 17:52

A beautiful shot from the midfielder here. The ball spins towards the goal but flies past it.

29.09.2024, 17:47

A thunderbolt from Fabio Celestini: He replaces Shaqiri with Marin Soticek. Shaqiri looks astonished and seems to take the decision with surprise…

29.09.2024, 17:44

…over the goal. And simultaneously also past it on the right. Perhaps he had time to adjust the ball to add more precision to this shot…

29.09.2024, 17:42

Again a quick advance from the blue-clad players. Villiger lays it to the center, Klidje pulls the trigger. That could have been very critical had Barisic not put his thigh in the trajectory.
