Bangladesh Film Censor Board has been demanding a certification board for a long time. Recently, Censor Board system was abolished and ‘Certification Board’ was formed.

The official journey of the certification board began on Monday (September 30) with the viewing of two awaited movies. The board’s schedule on the first day includes movies titled ‘Vhayal’ and ‘Rajkumari’. One of the members of the board, producer-actor-producer Khizir Hayat Khan confirmed this.

Khizir Hayat Khan said, ‘The work we are going to start is very difficult. It will take some time to reform the rules and make them film-friendly. Films will definitely change. For the time being, we are looking at the fact that the films can be released regularly in cinema halls.’

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued a notification in this regard on September 22, naming the film ‘Certification Board’ in view of the long-standing demands of filmmakers.

The British-made Cinematograph Act of 1918 was amended in 1952 and renamed as ‘East Bengal Board of Film Censors’. Even though there have been many changes in the political landscape, the map has changed, the rule of governing films has not changed in the past 72 years.

At the end of 2023, the previous government passed the Certification Board Act but could not make its rules. Finally, in 2024, the initiative of the interim government was implemented by the previous government. The word ‘sensor’ is removed.

The notification informed that the 15-member film certification board will be chaired by the secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The Vice Chairman of the Bangladesh Film Censor Board has been made the member secretary of the board.

Other members of the Board include— Secretary, Department of Law and Justice; Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser; Additional Secretary (Films), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting; A representative of the rank of Joint Secretary or above of the Department of Public Security; Bangladesh Film Development Corporation Managing Director; President of Bangladesh Film Directors Association; Independent University professor and filmmaker and researcher Dr. Zakir Hossain Raju; Film producer and director Rafiqul Anwar Russell; Film producer, director, distributor, writer and organizer Zahid Hossain; Film Editor Iqbal Ehsanul Kabir; Film Director Khizir Hayat Khan; Film actress Kazi Naushaba Ahmed and film director Tasmia Afrin Mau.
