Low yields of wheat and corn in Russia due to bad weather

Hot, dry or excessively wet conditions have ended several years of near-record high yields of winter cereals and grain maize, says the September edition of the European Commission’s Joint Research Center (JRC MARS Bulletin) entitled “Global outlook for Russia”, reported BTA.

In June, very high temperatures compromised the establishment of winter cereal crops, especially in the south-western parts of European Russia, where the negative impacts were exacerbated by insufficient water supply. Harvesting conditions are mostly favorable, but heavy and persistent rains in the Volgograd region are hampering progress and negatively impacting grain quality.

Hot and dry conditions have negatively impacted spring cereal yield potential across much of European Russia, while important production regions in Asian Russia have benefited from above-average rainfall. This has resulted in a medium to positive yield outlook for spring barley and spring wheat.

However, in many regions of Russia, harvesting is hampered by frequent rains, which has a negative impact on grain quality.

Colder than normal temperatures in May have adversely delayed early corn development. During the summer, heat waves and insufficient water supply during flowering and grain filling disrupted yield formation in the main maize producing areas. The maize harvest is currently ongoing and progressing well, the EC Joint Research Center bulletin found.
