/ Giorgio Chiellini, the former Italy and Juventus defender, announced his retirement from football at the age of 39, in a statement on his account on the “X” social media platform, formerly known as Twitter.

Chiellini played this season with Los Angeles FC in the American League.

Chiellini led the Italian national team to win the 2020 European Championship after defeating England on penalties in the final at Wembley Stadium.

The centre-back played 117 matches with his country’s national team.

Chiellini spent most of his club career at Juventus, and helped the team win the Italian Serie A title nine times, in addition to the Italian Cup title on five occasions and the same in the local Super Cup. He was also runner-up in the Champions League twice.

Chiellini, who played 425 league matches with Juventus during which he scored 27 goals, wrote on the X platform: “(Football) was the most beautiful and most difficult adventure in my life.”

He added: “You (football) were everything to me. With you, I traveled a unique and unforgettable journey.” He continued: “But now it is time for a new chapter in my career to take on new challenges and write more exciting pages in my life.”
