The House of Representatives voted unanimously in a public session today to appoint Naji Issa as Governor of the Central Bank of Libya, and Marai Al-Barasi as his deputy.
The session, which was chaired by Parliament Speaker Aguila Saleh, was attended by 108 members, to approve the central agreement stipulating the formation of a board of directors for the bank within 10 days.
For his part, Member of Parliament Jalal Al-Shuwaihdi called on the Attorney General to clarify the findings of his investigations and the measures taken regarding those he called the attackers of the Central Bank.
Al-Shuwehdi considered what happened at the Central Bank a “violation” of the bank’s privacy and systems, demanding that the Presidency of the House of Representatives be informed of the measures taken towards the “attacking group,” led by the governor-designate from the presidency, Abdel Fattah Ghaffar, as he put it.
On the other hand, Representative Muhammad Al-Abani called on the Presidency of the Council to punish the former governor, “Al-Siddiq Al-Kabir.” Because of what he called a usurpation of power and his file was referred to the Public Prosecutor.
Al-Abani also demanded that what the governor-designate of the presidential office, Abdel Fattah Ghaffar, did, be considered absolutely invalid. Because he was appointed and assigned by an unrelated party.
Two representatives of the House of Representatives and the State previously signed an agreement on the management of the Central Bank of Libya, nominating Naji Issa as governor of the bank and Marai Al-Barassi as his deputy, during consultations sponsored by the UN mission in Libya.
