The United Nations Support Mission in Libya reported that the acting UN envoy, Stephanie Khoury, held consultations with ambassadors and defense attaches participating in the security working group.

The UN mission added that the consultations come in preparation for the meeting of the Security Working Group scheduled to be held on October 17 in the city of Sirte.

According to the UN mission, the participants stressed the urgent need to support the efforts of the 5+5 Joint Military Committee in effectively implementing its mandate, especially strengthening the ceasefire agreement.

The attendees also expressed their hope for a fruitful exchange at the Sirte meeting, with the aim of enhancing stability and peace in Libya.

The Security Working Group emerged from the Berlin Track on Libya, a multi-track process facilitated by the United Nations and hosted by the German government and the mission in 2020 with the aim of reaching consensus among concerned member states on the Libyan crisis and providing an international umbrella to protect the Libyan-Libyan talks on the future of the country.

The first plenary session was held by the Security Working Group on May 24 of last year, with the participation of members of the “5+5” Joint Military Committee from eastern and western Libya, and in the presence of representatives of the members of the group, which includes, in addition to the United Nations, France, Britain, Turkey, Italy, and the African Union.
