The former Cagliari midfielder Andrea Capone was found dead this morning in a hotel in the Sardinian capital. The 43-year-old had a head injury likely caused by an accidental fall, possibly following a health issue. “The entire Cagliari Calcio community learns with dismay and deep sadness the news of Andrea Capone’s passing,” reads a statement from the Sardinian club. Emergency medical services intervened in the room occupied by Capone at Palazzo Tirso and found him dead.
The Investigations
The police are investigating the death, and experts from the Scientific Police and the forensic medicine team have also intervened. Capone had attended a friend’s party at the same hotel on Saturday night. His professional debut came at the age of 19 on the opening day of the 2000-2001 season in Serie B, during the Cagliari-Crotone match which ended 4-0 on September 3, 2000. It would be a season with 12 appearances and one goal, scored on April 8, 2001, in a 3-1 match against Cosenza. In total, he made 123 appearances, scored 12 goals, and provided 7 assists while in the Cagliari colors, before continuing his career in Vicenza, Grosseto, and finally Salerno. “The bond with his land will remain impossible to tarnish, for a boy always known for his professionalism, dedication, and passion,” the club remembers. “Qualities that will remain in the hearts of those who had the fortune to know him, to meet him on and off the field. Cagliari Calcio stands by the family in this time of deep sorrow. Rest in peace, Andrea.”
