Born on April 19, 1960 in Liaquatabad, Karachi, Umar Sharif started his career on the stage in 1974. He was rightly called the “King of Comedy”.
After starting work in stage plays, he was influenced by Manwar Zarif and added Zarif to his name. Later, he was so impressed by the Hollywood Egyptian actor Omar Sharif’s performance in the Hollywood film “Lawrence of Arabia” that he added his name. He got Sharif and this name became his identity.
Umar Sharif was perfect in spontaneity and poise, be it hockey commentary or parodies of actor Muhammad Ali, Aziz Mian Qawal’s style of Qawwali or stage drama, hosting a show or an award show, he had the art of making people laugh. He started the trend of releasing stage plays on audio cassettes in 1980, he acted in more than 50 stage plays, among his popular plays are the comedy drama Bakra Qasto Par, Badha Ghar Par Hai, Meri Bhi To Eid released in 1989. Omar Sharif had 3 marriages, his first wife’s name was Deba, the second marriage was with actress Shakeela Qureshi, while the third marriage was with actress Zareen Ghazal in 2005.
He was suffering from a heart condition and had undergone a bypass, suffered from a kidney problem, he was being taken by air ambulance to the United States for treatment. It was done and there he left this place on October 2, 2021. He is buried in the premises of Abdullah Shah Ghazi’s mausoleum in Karachi.
