The Hololens 2 from Microsoft is history: According to media reports, the company is discontinuing the data glasses. Only one variant will continue to be produced.

After five years, Microsoft is ending production and therefore sales of its Hololens 2 data glasses. The company confirmed the end of the headset to the magazine “UploadVR”. It is said that business partners and customers have already been informed.

Despite saying goodbye to the Hololens 2, Microsoft wants to continue to provide the data glasses with security updates until December 31, 2027. From January 1, 2028, software support will end.

Microsoft wants to provide the previous Hololens model, which was launched on the market in 2016, with updates by December 10th of this year. Production for the device ended in 2018.

A year later, Microsoft launched the successor Hololens 2. The group had thus implemented numerous requests from its customers and added improvements.

Among other things, the view through the data glasses was significantly sharper than with the previous model. Microsoft also more than doubled the field of vision with the new data glasses. In addition, the computing power has been increased.

Unlike glasses for virtual reality, Microsoft developed its devices primarily for use in companies.

The applications are used there, for example, for training employees. The data glasses are correspondingly expensive: the entry-level model costs 3,849 euros in this country.

However, Microsoft is not stopping the production of its data glasses in all areas. According to “UploadVR”, the group wants to further develop the device for the military sector under the name Integrated Visual Augmentation System (Ivas). The US Army plans to conduct a “company-wide operational test” of the glasses in early 2025, it is said.

Microsoft has not planned a successor model to Hololens 2. However, the group wants to deepen its strategic partnership with the Facebook group Meta and could participate in the software development for its Oculus data glasses, according to “UploadVR”.
