There is an uproar in India after the release of the Hema Committee report on sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry. Actress Minu Munir of the same industry filed a case against some popular actors of Malayalam cinema for physical abuse.
Minu Munir has filed a case against popular Malayalam actor Jayasuriya. This time the actress raised a complaint against actor-producer Balachandra Menon. She claims that Balachandra Menon forced her to watch porn videos in 2007.
Minu Munir gave an interview to India Today. Describing the incident, the actress said, “A few other people were watching (porn) there. Inside the room three girls and he (Balachandra Menon) were busy with these meetings. I started walking to leave the room. Then he says, ‘Sit and watch’.”
Minu Munir is getting several phone calls every day. Calling from an unknown number offering to pay money. They are talking about solving all problems through compromise. Referring to this information, Minu Munir said, ‘I do not receive calls from unknown numbers now.’
Minu Munir entered the film industry with many dreams. Referring to that, the actress said, ‘I had many dreams. But the industry has become a nightmare for me. It (the HEMA committee report) is not just for industry, it is part of our social cleansing.’
The Hema Committee report was published on August 19. The Hema Committee has revealed the facts of sexual harassment, casting couch, pay discrimination, exploitation in the Malayalam film industry. It has received allegations of sexual harassment against senior actors and producers. Since then, the Malayalam film industry has been under fire.
