To counter the growing dominance of Chinese technology, Washington is considering a total ban on vehicles with Chinese components or software. These measures will be taken by the States, both for economic reasons, but also for cyber security. By 2030, a two-stage plan to implement the restrictions will be implemented.

President Biden’s administration has unveiled a plan to ban the sale of cars equipped with parts from “risky countries” such as China. It covers software from 2027 and physical components in 2030. This solution includes cars, but also trucks and motorcycles.

The ban is part of a broader US policy to secure critical infrastructure in the face of the threat of cyber espionage. US officials fear that Chinese cars will become “Trojan horses”, allowing hackers to remotely sabotage infrastructure or collect sensitive data.

According to cybersecurity experts, this fear is well-founded. Cases of large-scale sabotage are rare, but the vulnerabilities of the electronic systems of these vehicles are very real.
