The United Nations Support Mission in Libya welcomed the House of Representatives’ approval of the candidates for the position of Governor and Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Libya.

In a statement, the UN mission called on all parties concerned to ensure a smooth handover and transfer process to the new leadership of the Central Bank of Libya, in line with the laws and procedures in force in Libya.

It also urged the mission to proceed with the appointment of a credible and professional board of directors, in accordance with the provisions of the September 25 agreement.

The mission noted the need for competent and accountable leadership of the Central Bank of Libya, including a board of directors, to restore confidence to the Libyan people and enhance the bank’s credibility within the global financial system.

The mission called on all relevant institutions to withdraw all unilateral decisions issued in the context of the Central Bank of Libya crisis.

The UN mission stressed the urgent need to end the closure of oil fields and stop disrupting its production and management, calling for revenues to be directed through the appropriate institutional framework to the Central Bank.

The mission considered that the progress achieved in resolving the crisis of the Central Bank of Libya revives hope for future progress regarding a comprehensive political process, under the auspices of the United Nations, that will lead the country to general elections.

The mission affirmed its commitment to supporting Libya’s march towards sustainable peace, stability and economic recovery, she said.

For its part, the US Embassy announced its participation with the UN mission in welcoming the appointment of a new governor and deputy governor of the Central Bank of Libya.

In a statement, the embassy expressed its hope that this agreement would pave the way towards restoring confidence and strengthening governance in this vital institution.

The US Embassy indicated that appointing a highly qualified technocratic board of directors would be a decisive step, she said.

The embassy urged us to maintain this momentum and reach consensus on a transparent and accountable mechanism to manage Libya’s revenues for the benefit of the people, according to the statement.
