The senior officer arrived at the Palace after the Court of Appeals refused to delay the hearing to hear Yáñez’s charges for the crimes of illegitimate coercion within the framework of the social outbreak.
La Moneda reported that it accepted the resignation of the general director of Carabineros, Ricardo Yáñez, facing the formalization that he will have to face on October 1, appointing General Marcelo Araya as his replacement.
The high official came to the Palace to present his resignation on his birthday, after the Court of Appeals refused to delay the hearing to hear Yáñez’s chargesfor the crimes of illegitimate coercion resulting in serious injuries and homicide, within the framework of the social outbreak.
After this, the Presidency indicated in a public statement that “the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric Font, has accepted the resignation of the general director of the Carabineros of Chile, Ricardo Yáñez Reveco.”
After that, the now former general Ricardo Yáñez faced the microphones of the press, stating that “I have had a relationship with the president, from day one, which has been with extreme frankness, with permanent communication during my administration.”
“I only have expressions of gratitude for the support you have given me during this administration and “Today I have made the decision, out of personal conviction, that in the face of the imminent formalization hearing I would never have thought of going as general director,” expressed Yáñez.
Along these lines, he specified that “respect for the institution, for my police officers, Respect for the uniform I wear and my professional career force me to make this decision, which certainly hurts.but it is a duty to fulfill it, because this uniform must be honored and dignified.”
