President Yoon Seok-yeol, who is on a 6-day, 5-night tour of Southeast Asia, is expected to hold his first summit meeting with the new Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Their first face-to-face meeting will take place through their attendance at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit held in Laos on the 10th.
A senior official in the Presidential Office met with reporters on the 3rd and said, “The Japanese Prime Minister has not confirmed his participation in ASEAN-related Laos,” but added, “We are discussing a Korea-Japan summit on the premise that the Japanese Prime Minister will come to Laos.” Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported on the 3rd that Prime Minister Ishiba plans to hold a Korea-Japan summit with President Yoon on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit to be held in Laos next week.
If the meeting takes place, it is highly likely that it will take the form of a meeting as it is the first time the leaders of the two countries meet. Regarding the agenda of the meeting, this official said, “The biggest meaning is that the leaders of Korea and Japan will meet face-to-face for the first time and continue the purpose of shuttle diplomacy,” and added, “I believe there will be serious discussions on how to develop Korea-Japan relations.” The President’s Office reported that President Yoon had his first phone call with Prime Minister Ishiba the previous day (the 2nd) and agreed that South Korea and Japan and Korea, the United States, and Japan need to unite to respond to the situation where North Korea’s provocations continue.
During this trip, President Yoon will make state visits to the Philippines and Singapore sequentially starting on the 6th, and then move to Laos, where the ASEAN Summit will be held. First lady Kim Kun-hee is also scheduled to accompany this trip. After attending the ASEAN Summit and the ASEAN+3 (Korea, China, and Japan) Summit, President Yoon will also hold a series of bilateral meetings with ASEAN countries such as Vietnam and Thailand. Kim Tae-hyo, First Deputy Director of the National Security Office, said, “We have decided to upgrade the relationship between Korea and ASEAN to a ‘comprehensive strategic partnership,’ which is the highest relationship between Korea and ASEAN.” He added, “Korea will further strengthen political, security, and trade cooperation with ASEAN and promote multi-level cooperation covering cyber, digital, and climate change response.” “He said.
We also plan to discuss ways to cooperate with the Philippines, which has resumed nuclear power plant construction after halting it in 1986. Park Chun-seop, Senior Secretary to the President for Economic Affairs, explained, “The Philippines hopes to cooperate with Korea, which has the world’s best nuclear power plant competitiveness, and specific cooperation plans will be discussed through this visit.”
