Indore: Madhya Pradesh’s first district level committee has been constituted in Indore to ensure safe environment for women tourists and resolve their complaints. Similar district level committees will be formed at major tourist destinations across the state, where there is a significant influx of tourists. Such committees will be formed in these districts also.
The districts where such a committee is to be formed include Ujjain, Khandwa, Khargone, Niwari, Jabalpur, Anuppur and Hoshangabad. The police-led Indore district committee comprises more than 15 members from law enforcement, district administration, revenue, tourism, archeology and other departments.
A safe environment will be created for women
Dr. Seema Alava, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Nodal Officer of Indore District Committee, said, ‘We have constituted the first district level committee of the state, which will work in collaboration with several departments to promote a safe environment for women tourists. With the increasing number of tourists and solo female tourists in the state, the need to create a strong and safe environment for women has become increasingly important.’
According to the Travel Agents Association of India MP and CG Chapter, an association of travel agents, the proportion of women travelers among the total tourist arrivals in Madhya Pradesh has increased to 20 per cent.
MoU with MP Police
Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB) has signed an MoU with Madhya Pradesh Police to provide training and raise awareness to the people. Madhya Pradesh Tourism Minister Dharmendra Singh Lodhi said, ‘Madhya Pradesh has emerged as a favorite tourist destination due to its rich heritage, vibrant culture and attractive tourist attractions. The influx of tourists is increasing every year. The state government is committed to establish a safe environment where women passengers feel safe and comfortable.
The Minister informed that these committees will serve as an initiative to promote growth in the tourism sector by promoting closer collaboration between law enforcement, district administration, tourism and other concerned departments. We will try to replicate this model in the entire state.
The committee is being prepared like this
Under the Safe Tourist Destinations for Women (STDW) project, MPTB has trained about 8000 women and given self-defense training to 35,000 persons. The project aims to prepare women for 48 different roles in the hospitality sector, including guards, drivers, boat operators, tour assistants and hotel operators.
