US President Joe Biden and his top advisers have urged Israel to refrain from direct strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities in response to Tehran’s missile attack.
Among the options being considered are strikes on Iranian-backed militias or directly on Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Yemen or Syria.
US presidential aides have said they support a strategic but limited retaliatory strike.
Following the Iranian missile strike, Israel’s UN ambassador called for an urgent meeting of the Security Council.
He warned of a “painful response” and pointed to the scale of the attack, which forced ten million Israelis to hide in bomb shelters.
Iran fired more than 200 rockets at Israel on Tuesday as fighting escalated between Israel and the Iranian-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah. Israel claims most of the rockets were intercepted.
