However, this season is also used by cybercriminals to try to steal personal and financial data using deception techniques known as phishing, wishes y smishing. These attacks consist of sending fake emails, phone calls or text messages that pretend to be from legitimate entities, such as banks, companies or public institutions, and that request confidential information or invite you to click on malicious links.

Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the regions with the highest incidence of cyberattacks in the world. According to a LATAM CISO 2023 cybersecurity report, prepared by 12 companies in the sector, the region receives more than 1,600 cyberattacks per second. The economic damage from cyberattacks could exceed 1% of the Gross Domestic Product in some countries in the region and rises to 6% when it comes to cyberattacks on critical infrastructure.

“In this holiday shopping season, it is essential that we are all alert and take preventive measures to avoid possible cyber fraud,” said Carola Aguilera, Deputy Marketing Manager of Banco Ganadero, who also gives some tips to protect your bonus and your personal information from cybercriminals:

  2. Check the authenticity of web pages before entering your data banking or personal. Make sure the address starts with https:// and has a green padlock next to it. Don’t trust offers that are too good to be true, or sites that ask you for unnecessary or excessive information. “Always consult the official sources of the businesses, avoid links that arrive by email or social networks,” Aguilera recommended.
  3. Use strong, different passwords for each account or service that you use. Change your passwords periodically and do not share them with anyone. Use a password manager to store passwords securely and generate them randomly. “A strong password should have at least eight characters, including letters, numbers and symbols,” Aguilera explained.
  4. Activate two-step verification or biometrics in your banking apps or payment. This way, you will have an extra layer of security when carrying out your operations. You can also activate alerts or notifications to be aware of any movement in your accounts.
