October 2, 1958 remains a symbolic date for our country, which today celebrates the anniversary of its independence for the 66th consecutive year (1958-2024). It is an auspicious moment for pioneers but also to demonstrate national pride and provide reflections on the collective history of the country of Sékou Touré. Through this revealing interview, Mr. Ibrahima Kalil Diané, commonly known as Soninké Diané, consultant trainer, civil society activist and very attached to the ideals of the history of independent Guinea, recalled the importance of national cohesion, teaching our history and the role of civil society in building a common future. He subsequently urged that historical facts be substantiated objectively, referring to the theme of the celebration: “drawing inspiration from the past to build the future together”.
Mediaguinee.com : What feelings does the celebration of this 66th anniversary of independence inspire in you, and how has it evolved over the years?
Soniké Diane : October 2 every year is a great event for our country, also a precursor of the movements fighting for the independence of African countries. It represents national and sovereign pride, we can only rejoice. Independence has no equal in the life of a nation, of a country. Recent events in the sub-region are a perfect illustration of this. Let us take our hats off to the fathers of our independence. Beyond that, we must get to work for the future of our country.
Mediaguinee.com : In your opinion, what is the impact of this celebration on national cohesion and Guinean identity?
Soniké Diane : When you read the summary table of the vote of September 28, 1958, we observe a high score for the no to the community, that is to say “Yes” for independence. This means that the commitment and determination of the population were focused on solidarity, the common wish of all, therefore this reality the cohesion that must be established between the different components of this nation. The various executives must take into account this starting point of the Republic of Guinea.
Mediaguinee.com : What initiatives or projects have you observed this year that highlight the history and values of Guinean independence?
Soniké Diane : You know, the problem in our country is the fact that historical facts are not objectively supported. The strong sign that the CNRD, led by President Doumbouya, has marked is the name of the First President of independent Guinea Ahmed Sekou TOURÉ at the Gbessia Conakry international airport. President Conté did it for the presidency of the Republic. It’s true, there are many things to do, the tone being set, other initiatives will follow.
Mediaguinee.com : How can civil society play a more active role in celebrating and reflecting on independence?
Soniké Diane : Civil society is obliged to popularize the republican values of our country on a daily basis and not occasionally (…).
Mediaguinee.com : What message would you like to convey to younger generations regarding the independence and future of Guinea?
Soniké Diane : The only thing that can help young people is to learn the history of the Republic of Guinea. Reading helps a lot and it allows us to move away from the subjectivities that we teach to young people, in our families (…).
