Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia Vakhtang Gomelauri issued an order according to which special groups will be created at territorial police departments that will be responsible for preventing and detecting offenses during the parliamentary elections on October 26.
As Day.Az reports with reference to TASS, the press service of the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs reported this.
New units will be on duty near polling stations on voting day and will be guided by the Georgian Law “On Police”. The order also obliges police officers to exercise political neutrality while on duty. Law enforcement officers are prohibited from resorting to such actions that could be perceived as direct or indirect support of a particular political party.
As the Ministry of Internal Affairs explained, the creation of special units is aimed at the police to conduct elections in a safe and calm environment.
Parliamentary elections will be held in Georgia on October 26. This will be the first election using electronic ballot boxes, which will be installed in 74% of polling stations, covering almost 90% of voters.
In addition to devices that read votes from ballots, technology will be used to verify voters. The ruling Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia party, which has been in power for 12 years, will try to win for the fourth time.
Its main opponent, as in previous elections, is considered to be the United National Movement, founded by ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili. To enter parliament, parties will need to overcome the five percent threshold.
