Prime Minister Naftali Bennett spoke tonight (Thursday) with the chairman of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, on the eve of Grossi’s trip to Tehran.

In their conversation, the Prime Minister emphasized Israel’s positions regarding the nuclear talks in Vienna, as well as regarding the open cases in the IAEA dealing with the Iranian weapons program.

The Prime Minister also emphasized Israel’s expectation that the IAEA would act as a professional and impartial supervisory body. The two agreed to stay in regular contact.

“In two and a half years, the restrictions on Iran will disappear”

“A bad nuclear deal is about to be signed in Vienna,” Foreign Minister Lapid said in reference to talks in Vienna. “It’s the same agreement that was signed in 2015, but then it restricted Iran from uranium enrichment to ten years. In the re-signing, they did not do one simple thing: they did not change the dates. They left the expiration date of a large part of the restrictions on Iran in 2025. “Another two and a half years. In two and a half years, the restrictions on Iran will disappear.”

Defense Minister Bnei Gantz also clarified that “even if an agreement is signed with Iran, it is not the end of the verse. Efforts must be continued to prevent it from reaching a nuclear threshold and curbing its aggression in the region.”

Amir Abdullahian, the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, said in an unpublished interview that “the United States and the West are responsible for the possible failure of the talks.”

He added optimistically about the state of the nuclear talks in Vienna: “We have never been as close to a deal in the talks in Vienna as we are now and there is a possibility of reaching an agreement within a few hours or days – if the talks fail, the Americans will be responsible.” He reiterated that the Iranian team is trying to reach a good agreement (for Iran), with optics and seriousness.
