France is afraid to hold elections in New Caledonia“/>
France was afraid to hold elections in New Caledonia. Yes, Prime Minister Michel Barnier announced that elections in the Pacific territory of New Caledonia, where there have recently been mass protests, postponed until the end of 2025.
As Day.Az reports with reference to AFP, Barnier, in his speech to parliament, voiced this step as one of the key political priorities. He noted that the government had decided to abandon the controversial electoral reform, which had sparked a wave of protests in the territory, and would not submit it to a joint session of parliament for approval.
Barnier also announced a planned visit to New Caledonia by a special parliamentary mission, which will include the speakers of both houses of the French parliament.
Recall that the unrest in New Caledonia began in May due to a reform proposed by Paris, which the indigenous population, the Kanaks, perceived as a threat to their desire for independence.
The protests left 13 people dead, including two police officers, and hundreds injured. France sent several thousand troops and police to the territory to suppress the protesters.
