The wooden seated Buddha statue of Munjusa Temple has an outstanding sculptural style, and there is still a prayer inscription that clearly confirms the date of production, maker, production background, and place where the Buddha statue was enshrined, making it an important work in the study of Buddhist sculpture in the 18th century and has academic and artistic value. was evaluated as high.
The Buddha statue is small, measuring about 58.5cm, and is in a cross-legged posture. He was dressed in a modified form with the right forearm exposed, and the width of the knees and the upper body were in good harmony. In addition, the artistic value is high as the characteristics of Sanjeong works are well expressed in facial features such as eyes, nose, mouth, hands, and wrinkles in clothes.
The clothing relics were confirmed to include a ‘Worman’, a ‘Huryeongtong (候鈴筒)’ wrapped in a cloth called ‘Hwangchobokja’, a manuscript and a woodblock version of ‘Dharani’, and three types of ‘Lotus Sutra’.
According to the creation prayer, the sculpture statue was created with the participation of four people, including monk Sangjeong, a representative sculptor of the Jinyeol lineage who was active in Jeolla-do and Gyeongsang-do in the late Joseon Dynasty, and about 700 people, including donors and ministers, who participated in the creation of the Buddha statue. Meanwhile, the designation of the ‘Gochang Munsusa Wooden Seated Shakyamuni Statue and Clothing Relics’, which was announced this time, will be decided on whether to be designated through deliberation by the Provincial Cultural Heritage Committee after collecting opinions from all walks of life for 30 days.
