For Inter Miami, the dream is no longer taboo
Messi‘s name, in itself, is incompatible with narrow ambitions. Not surprisingly, when he arrived last year at Inter Miami, he caught the attention of all football fans. Coincidentally, after the arrival of the Argentine champion, the Florida team won the first trophy in its history. In fact, against Nashville in August 2023 the Herons prevailed on penalties, winning the League Cup 10 goals from the spot against 9 opponents. Regular time, however, ended 1-1, with a goal from Messi himself.
Appetite, as we know, comes with eating. So today Inter Miami won the Supporter’s Shield two days early. He did it by beating the Columbus Crew 2-3 in Ohio. Also in this case, Leo Messi and Luis Suarez, former teammates at Barcelona in the golden years, were decisive.
Messi’s brace and Suarez’s goal, fundamental to the victory, confirm them as the drivers of the Rosanero season. Indeed, the first scored an impressive 17 goals. The latter scored 16. With 68 points, therefore, Inter Miami is already mathematically positioned at the top of the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer. They are the team that won second place in the last game they won. The Columbus Crew, moreover, were the winners in the last edition of the MLS.
In the other ranking, that of the Western United States, the Los Angeles Galaxy appears in first place. However, they cannot collect the same points as their opponents on the east coast.
Once the “regular season” is over (the one that goes from February to October-November and ends with the conquest of the Supporter’s Shield) the playoffs for the title of MLS champion are approaching. Inter Miami is one of your favorites. The coming weeks will tell us how legitimate it is to keep dreaming.
