The number of enrollments in in-person higher education courses continues to decline in Brazil and has almost been surpassed by distance learning in 2023. The data was released this Thursday (3) by the Lula government (PT).

Of the 9.9 million students in higher education, 4.9 million study in distance learning courses, or 49% of those enrolled. Another 5.06 million take in-person courses. Since 2020, Brazil has seen more students taking distance learning courses than in-person courses. In 2023, 66% of the 4.9 million who entered higher education did so by taking EAD (distance education) courses.

The number of enrolled corresponds to the number of students who started a course in that year, while those enrolled include students at any level of the degree course. The 2023 Higher Education Census was released after a delay of more than a month from the official schedule.
