MADRID 4 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The French government said it “takes note” this Friday of the decision of the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU) overturning the trade agreements on agriculture and fisheries between the EU and Morocco, considering that both were concluded without the consent of the people.
“It is not up to France to comment on a judicial decision. In any case, France reaffirms its firm adherence to its exceptional partnership with Morocco and its determination to continue to deepen it,” the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
In this sense, she assured that she remains “particularly determined to accompany Morocco’s efforts in favor of the economic and social development of Western Sahara for the benefit of local populations”.
The Ministry insisted that the relationship between the EU and Morocco has a “strategic character”. “France will continue to work with its European partners to strengthen their exchanges, especially economic ones, and preserve the achievements of the association, respecting international law,” he concluded.
The Moroccan government, which believes that the CJEU wants to “replace” the UN bodies responsible for this territorial dispute, has made it clear that it will never sign any agreement “that does not respect its territorial integrity and national unity”, within which places Western Sahara.
Friday’s ruling, however, justifies the illegalization of trade and fishing agreements in which both were concluded without the consent of the people of Western Sahara, who they believe are represented by the Polisario Front.
