Celebrating the World Heart Day, Latvian residents are invited to sign a global initiative to improve heart health. The aim of the initiative is to bring the issue of heart health not only to the decision-making power of Latvia, but also to the world agenda.
The initiative is organized by the World Heart Federation, represented in Latvia by the association “Par Sirdi.lv”. The goal of the World Heart Federation is to collect at least one million signatures and address the governments of all the countries of the world with a call to develop a national policy action plan that would provide people with access to diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases and promote the prevention of these diseases.
“In Latvia, you have to wait in long lines for examinations and to see a doctor. Many medicines needed by heart patients are only partially paid for by the state. That is why it is important to get involved in this initiative in order to encourage the politicians of our country to adopt the Latvian Cardiovascular Disease Health Improvement Action Plan 2025-2027. for the year. At the same time, taking into account the fact that 80% of cardiovascular diseases can be prevented through prevention, Latvia should develop its own national policy for promotion of prevention. It is necessary to start with education in schools, promoting the availability of healthy food and developing the infrastructure of physical activities”, says Inese Mauriņa, head of the association “Par Sirdi.lv”.
According to data from the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases are one of the most common causes of death in Europe. More than four million people die each year, which is about 45% of all deaths. In Latvia, 17,000 people will die from cardiovascular diseases in 2022, which is about half of all deaths.
The appeal of the World Heart Federation can be signed on the website of the “Let a healthy heart beat” campaign or on the website of the World Heart Federation.
For reference:
“Heart diseases affect more than 523 million people in the world, which is almost twice as many as two decades ago. Every year, 20 million people die from cardiovascular diseases, and one in three of these deaths is premature – people under the age of 70 die. 75% of deaths caused by cardiovascular diseases occur in low- and middle-income countries, where prevention and treatment options are more limited,” the organizers of the campaign explain.
