The Spusu Vienna Capitals lost 1:4 against Hydro Fehérvár AV19 on Friday evening. After a scoreless first third, it was the Viennese who scored in the second third on the power play through Brett Kemp (27th/PP1). 15 seconds before the end of the period, Chris Brown equalized with a numerical advantage (40./PP1). In the third, Joel Messner (50th/PP1), Akos Mihaly (52nd) and Istvan Bartalis (54th) scored for Hungary to win. On Sunday the spusu Vienna Capitals will face the Moser Medical Graz99ers in the PULS24 live game. The game starts at 5.30pm.
Caps coach Gerry Fleming had to do without goalkeeper Tyler Parks and forward Jérémy Grégoire against Hydro Fehérvár AV19 due to injuries. Bernhard Posch was not on the scoreboard as a healthy kicker. Sebastian Wraneschitz started in goal for the second time in a row. The visitors’ first big chance of the game came from former Caps forward Trevor Cheek. The American, who was playing his first game of the season, pushed the goal past the goal while standing at the far post in the fourth minute. Niki Hartl followed up a minute later after winning a goal in the Fehérvár area, but was unable to get the puck past Rasmus Reijola into the goal. Shortly after that things got serious in front of the visitors’ goal. Evan Jasper and Joel Messner fought a split in which Aljaž Predan and Reijola were also involved. Only Jasper and Messner were penalized, both players receiving two minute penalties for cross checks. In the sixth minute, Gergö Ambrus was sent to the penalty box for hooking, which led to the first Caps power play. The first good chance on the power play came to Brett Kemp in the seventh minute, but the puck didn’t get past Reijola after his shot. Shortly before the end of the power play, Kemp fired another shot, which the Fehérvár goalkeeper could only let rebound. However, the visitors were able to clear the goal in front of Zane Franklin and were higher. Jack Dougherty pulled away in the ninth minute and Reijola was the winner again. Shortly after, Cameron Gaunce fired a hidden shot, but Wraneschitz was unable to counter him. In the eleventh minute, the guests found space in the Vienna zone, but Wraneschitz kept a clean sheet against Chase Berger, among others. Peter Krieger tried it in the 12th minute, and Reijola stood up again. Minutes later the next penalty against Hungary was given, Istvan Bartalis was charged for tripping Franklin. Jason Willms tried from close range, but, like Jasper, failed immediately after. Fehérvár lived to be higher without conceding a goal and then went on the counter, Messner put the goal on the bar. Leon Wallner was unable to fire a dangerous shot from a tight angle in the 19th minute. Shortly after, Wraneschitz saved a shot from Martin Stajnoch.
In the 23rd minute, Ambrus made his way towards the Caps goal, but Wraneschitz made a save to keep the score at zero. In the 25th minute, Wallner had a shot in the slot, but missed the target. In the end, the Viennese failed because of Reijola, and Armin Preiser was unable to take advantage of the resulting rebound. In the 26th minute, Stajnoch cleared Patrick Antal in front of the goal with a cross check and was sent to the penalty box. Just 20 seconds after the penalty was called, the window smashed into the visitors’ box. Willie Raskob shot but passed the puck to Kemp, who only had to deflect the ball into the goal (27′). Two minutes later, Reijola got to work again, but the Finn saved against Willms. Krieger took a shot in the 31st minute after a great assist from Franklin, but the visitors’ goalkeeper threw himself into the shot at the last second. However, Reijola was surprised by a shot from Mario Fischer, and the Finns were unable to hold on against Hartl after that. In the 34th minute, Wraneschitz distinguished himself with another save. Kemp moved towards the only goal in the 36th minute, but put the goal just wide. Ambrus shot from behind a minute later and Wraneschitz was there again. This was also the case in the 38th minute after a shot from the blue line. The Caps cleared the rebound with combined forces. After a save from Wraneschitz 2:01 minutes before the end of the period, Dominic Hackl was too energetic against his opponent and was penalized for crosschecking – the first power play for the guests. They equalized 15 seconds before the end of the period when Chris Brown put the puck into the goal. The goal stood two video reviews, one for goalkeeper interference and one for offside.
Franklin had the first good chance in the final period immediately after the restart, but the disc did not jump past Reijola into the goal. Moments later, Kemp appeared in front of the Fehérvár goal after interacting with Krieger, but Reijola prevented anything worse from happening again. Raskob’s shot was deflected minutes later into the safety net. In the 45th minute, Wraneschitz saved a long shot from Roland Kiss. The visitors then took a lot of pressure, but the close defense of Caps and the careful Wraneschitz prevented another goal. In the 48th minute, Predan went alone, and again the away keeper was the winner. Moments later the next penalty was against the Caps. Krieger was penalized for cross-checking, but not Brown, who responded with his own tough action. In the 50th minute, Wraneschitz was able to differentiate himself from Brown, then Messner shot the puck from the backcourt into the goal (50th/PP1). In the 52nd minute the visitors increased the score. First Wraneschitz pared against the counterattack Csanad Erdely, then the Caps goalie was not back at his post after a collision with Raskob, Akos Mihaly just pushed in. Two minutes later Bartalis scored to make it 1:4 (54th). In the 57th minute, Antal finished with a goal, but he only missed a goal. Shortly after, Seamus Donohue was penalized for a tackle, but the Caps stayed on top but did not concede a goal. With 15.7 seconds left in the third, Josh Atkinson was penalized for tripping Mathias Böhm, but that didn’t change the result. The Caps finished the game with 21 shots, the guests hit Wraneschitz’s goal 26 times. The 22-year-old recorded 22 saves.

Statement by Gerry Fleming, Head Coach der spusu Vienna Capitals
“There are certain aspects of our game that we really need to improve on. He started today with the mission, which I was not satisfied with at all. We lost too many duels for the goal, they were often slower than our opponents, and we were too often left behind in front of the goal. A game of ice hockey consists of a series of duels, usually the team that succeeds more often wins the game. We have to work on that, it starts with training and video study, that’s exactly what we’ll do.”
