THE patron of the Kyrukú Foundation, Patricia Sendagortawho coordinated the Delicia Project so that the girl from Burundi underwent surgery in Spain, explained that the case “was particularly serious, since a part of her brain was protruding from the skull, which exposed her to constant risk of death”.

The congenital malformation is called encephalocele and occurs during the embryonic and fetal phase.

“In Delicia’s case, the problem was that the encephalocele was at the base of the frontal lobe and what her brain did when it came out was to compress and separate the two orbits, which caused her to have a significant facial defect and problems with coordination of the brain. view. .”, second neurosurgeon Francisco González-Llanos.

According to this expert in maxillofacial surgery, the operation was carried out in three phases: “exposure of the encephalocele, repair of the defect and reconstruction”.

González-Llanos said the operation was “very satisfactory” and that Delicia’s life is not in danger due to this congenital malformation.

The girl will have no neurological consequences other than the loss of smell. His vision has been corrected and a good functional and aesthetic result is expected.

This was the reconstruction

He also participated in the intervention maxillofacial surgeon César Colmenerowho defined the reconstruction as “very complex” as “it was necessary to bring part of the brain back into the cranial cavity, reunite the separate orbits and reconstruct the hole in the frontonasal area”.

The reconstruction was performed with the patient’s own tissue. Colmenero underlined that the most complex part was “the fusion of the two eye sockets in the midline. “You have to be very careful because there is a risk that the patient will go blind,” he added.

This expert assured that the girl’s face has remained normal and her quality of life will be good: “She was operated on ten days ago and already leads a normal life.”

If he hadn’t had surgery, the most likely thing, he said, was that an infection would have ended his life. If he hadn’t become infected he would have vision problems in his eye sockets “and all of this has been resolved”.

According to this doctor, Delicia will return to Burundi in fifteen days or a month, once the doctors have arrived Ruber International Hospital We confirm that there are no post-operative complications, in the meantime he will be in Madrid under the care of a family of volunteers.

Once in her country, the Kyrikú Foundation will continue to monitor Delicia’s recovery through consultations and periodic visits to Burundi, where the organization maintains a constant presence.
