Veracruz artist María Lagunes dies; will receive tribute in Fine Arts

On the morning of this October 3, the secretary of CultureClaudia Curiel de Icazareported on the death of the Veracruz artist and sculptor Maria Laguneswhich last month had been recognized with the Fine Arts Gold Medal for its undisputed career in its field.

Lagunes was born in Hacienda de Angostillo, Veracruz in July 1922. He studied music and Interior Decoration in his native state.and continued his studies at the Higher Center of Applied Arts of the Citadel and at the Academy of San Carlos. That preparation helped him to be awarded a scholarship by the French Government in 1966 to study in Paris with André Bloc.

Being there, immersed in the French artistic culture of the late 60s and 70s, attended workshops with Ossip Zadkine, Éttienne-Martin, François Stahly and Saint-Maur. At the same time, she began to develop as a teacher at the Faculty of Architecture of the National Autonomous University of Mexico and was invited to be part of the May Salon of the Museum of Modern Art in Paris from 1973 to 2000.

The federal Ministry of Culture recognizes diversification in the work of the Veracruz sculptor:

“His sculptural work, small, medium and large format, is characterized by its abstract and geometric volumes, assembled in architectural compositions. Biomorphic figures, monoliths or character-citiesamong other creations, are part of a wide production made in bronze, concrete, chrome steel, marble, wood, granite, onyx, acrylic and textile.”

After opting for the plastic arts in the late 1950s, “he defined his path with the support of renowned artists such as Arturo García Bustos, Francisco Dosamantes, Guillermo Silva, Tomás Chávez Morado, Francisco Zúñiga, Juan Soriano and Antonio Rodríguez Luna.” Thanks to this, he gained a very strong training “which he combined with a natural talent for the development of his artistic activity.”

Part of his work is found in public and private collections in Mexico and the rest of the world. Some of his greatest sculpture projects are the Monument to Rosario Castellanoswhich was erected in the Chapultepec Forest; Signal, located in the Torre Lomas building; and Cyclic Movements, in the English Garden located in Caserta, Italy.

In addition to the Gold Medal Fine Arts of Mexicoteacher María Lagunes received a Gold Medal and honorable mention at the Biennale Internazionale della Pietra in 1980, was named Accademica Corrispindente of the Accademia Greci-Marino de Vercelli in 1999, named Corresponding Member of the Academy of Arts of Mexico in 2020, inter alia.

To recognize his endless career and his great contribution, through the Ministry of Culture, a tribute will be paid to him in person. at the Palace of Fine Arts on Friday, October 4, 2024 at exactly 5:00 p.m.
