‘V-League Champion’ Hyundai Engineering & Construction won the cup competition for the first time in three years thanks to the even performance of its key players.
On the 6th, Hyundai Engineering & Construction achieved a 3-1 (23-25 25-15 25-14 25-18) comeback victory over Cheong Kwan-Jang in the women’s final of the 2024 Tongyeong-Dodram Cup Professional Volleyball Tournament at Tongyeong Gymnasium in Gyeongnam.
As a result, Hyundai Engineering & Construction regained the top spot in the cup competition for the first time in three years since 2021 and achieved its fifth win in total. Jeong Kwan-jang, who had aimed to win for the first time in six years since 2018, was satisfied with second place.
Hyundai Engineering & Construction’s foreign player Letizia Moma Basoko (registered name Moma) was selected as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) by receiving 12 out of 31 votes in the press vote, beating teammate Jeong Ji-yoon (10 votes) by 2 votes.
Apogee spiker Shin Eun-ji, who joined CheongKwanJang ahead of this season, was selected as a rising star.
Cheong Kwan-Jang’s new foreign player, Vanja Bukiric, received the MIP, which is given to the runner-up team’s distinguished player.
Hyundai Engineering & Construction performed evenly, with as many as five members scoring in double digits.
MoMA led the team to victory by scoring the most points on the team with 19 points. Jeong Ji-yoon added 17 points by making 4 blocks. Yang Hyo-jin (14 points), Wipawi Si-tong (11 points), and Lee Da-hyeon (10 points) also contributed.
CheongKwanJang’s Asia Quarter team member Megawattie Puttywi (registered name Mega) and foreign player Bukiric combined for 36 points, but bowed their heads in defeat.
Hyundai Engineering & Construction seemed to be taking the lead early in the first set, taking an 11-6 lead through the opponent’s mistakes and attacks from MoMA, Yang Hyo-jin, and others.
But Jeonggwanjang did not collapse like this. First, Jeong Gwan-jang, who focused on defense, set the tone through solid defense and then pursued the chase with the twin guns of Mega and Bukirich. In the end, Cheong Kwan Jang tied the score at 14-14 and took the first set at 25-23.
Hyundai E&C quickly reorganized its line, and in the early part of the second set, Jeong Ji-yoon and MoMA scored to go up 8-3. Hyundai Engineering & Construction, which failed to maintain its lead earlier, did not repeat the same mistake. Hyundai Engineering & Construction continued to score without stopping, and MoMA’s serve ace brought the set score to 25-15.
Hyundai Engineering & Construction, which set the tone, continued its momentum into the third set. With a 1-point lead at 10-9 at the beginning of the third set, Hyundai Engineering & Construction took turns scoring points from Wipawi, MoMA, and Yang Hyo-jin to advance to 13-9. Hyundai Engineering & Construction, which took the lead, easily won the third set with 25-14 thanks to MoMA’s serve score and Da-hyun Lee’s central attack.
Hyundai Engineering & Construction was dominant in the 4th set. Hyundai Engineering & Construction took an 8-3 lead from the beginning and rarely allowed themselves to catch up. Yang Hyo-jin, MoMA, and Da-hyeon Lee scored evenly, shaking off the opponent’s pursuit and lifting the championship cup.
