Contrasting Reception for Recent Horror Game Remakes
Two high-profile remakes of beloved cinematic horror games are hitting the market this week, but the reactions to both have been quite different.
Konami and developer Bloober Team will release their “Silent Hill 2” remake on Tuesday, and critics’ reviews are already excellent. The game currently holds an 87/100 rating on PC and an 86/100 for PlayStation on Metacritic after nearly sixty reviews.
That’s the second-best score of the franchise, behind only the original “Silent Hill 2” (89). It is closely following the second and fourth “Resident Evil” remakes (91 & 93), well above the third RE’s remake (79) and “Resident Evil Village” (84).
In comparison to other recent games, it stands on par with “Persona 3 Reload,” the “Riven” remake, and “Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.”
The consensus among reviews indicates that it is a successful remake, remaining faithful to the original while effectively modernizing the experience.
Conversely, the reception for Sony’s “Until Dawn” remake for PS5 and PC has been mixed. Currently, there are too few reviews for a Metacritic ranking, but audience feedback on platforms like Steam reflects divided opinions.
Negative reviews frequently mention issues with crashes and freezes in the PC version, along with optimization concerns, even on high-end hardware. Complaints about stuttering and screen tearing signal potential problems with performance.
Initial PS5 reviews echo similar sentiments, highlighting poor frame rates and crashes. Furthermore, the creative choices made, particularly alterations in the game’s soundtrack—including the removal of “O Death”—have experienced overwhelmingly negative feedback.
Graphical changes have received mixed reviews; while some praise the higher-resolution models, others find the new lighting alters the game’s overall atmosphere, diminishing the iconic moody darkness of the original.
A few new scenes have been added, which some speculate hint at a sequel. The team has issued one patch so far for the game, and it appears that additional updates will be necessary to address widespread concerns.
Expert Roundtable Discussion
To shed light on these contrasting receptions, we gathered insights from industry experts:
Dr. Amy Reynolds, Game Designer
“It’s concerning to see such disparities in the quality of these remakes. While Silent Hill 2 respects its heritage and enhances the experience, Until Dawn seems to struggle with technical execution.”
James Lee, Gaming Journalist
“The backlash against Until Dawn is disappointing, especially since the original was received so well. Soundtrack changes have sparked a lot of debates among fans too. It’s critical for developers to understand their audience’s attachment to the original content.”
Dr. Clara Johnson, Media Studies Expert
“Remakes hold a unique position in gaming culture. They not only review the past but often reshape our understanding of these narratives. Developers need to balance innovation with nostalgia to keep the fanbase engaged.”
