Synopsis: ‘The greatest conman’, Jang Du-chil, suddenly dies!
News is announced that Jang Doo-chil, the ‘greatest conman’ who turned the Republic of Korea upside down, has suddenly passed away. However, along with rumors that he is still alive, speculation begins to circulate that those in power who protected him intentionally released him. Ji-seong (Hyun Bin), a conman who only picks out con artists, claims that Doo-chil Jang is still alive and suggests to the prosecutor in charge of the case, Hee-soo Park (Ji-tae Yoo), that they catch him for sure. Prosecutor Park’s unofficial investigative route, a trio of con artists including Ko Seok-dong (Bae Seong-woo), Chun-ja (Nana), and Manager Kim, joins them and begins to plan a new plan to approach Jang Doo-chil’s hidden confidant, Kwak Seung-geon (Park Seong-woong). However, Prosecutor Park secretly sets up an operation for another purpose other than arresting Jang Doo-chil, and Ji-seong and other criminals who notice this begin to make their own plans to avoid being fooled…
Commentary: A film that stands out for its unexpected team play by ‘scammers’
“All the characters are alive and each has their own twist. As Hyun Bin confidently recommends, “It is a movie that can change depending on whose point of view you follow in the midst of continuous twists and turns,” and it is a movie that stands out for its fresh combination of actors with diverse charms and their unexpected team play. The most important thing in order to express each living, breathing character well was the perfect casting combination.
Director Jang Chang-won struggled to strike a delicate balance between unexpectedness and familiarity in the combination of casting and characters, as six actors with the same but different goals must engage in unpredictable team play. First, Hyun Bin, Yoo Ji-tae, and Park Sung-woong added freshness by looking different from their existing images. Hyun Bin plays the role of an intelligent conman, Ji-seong, and catches everyone’s attention with his sly and relaxed charm that is different from before. Yoo Ji-tae exudes cold charm as Park Hee-soo, an ambitious prosecutor who uses con artists to catch them. Park Seong-woong plays the role of ‘Kwak Seung-geon’, the right-hand man of their target, the great conman ‘Jang Doo-chil’, and exerts a strong presence by instilling tense tension. Here, Bae Seong-woo, Nana, and others play the roles of ‘Go Seok-dong’, ‘Chun-ja’, and ‘Chief Manager Kim’, a trio of con artists with the unofficial route of prosecutor ‘Park Hee-soo’, and are responsible for the fun and laughter of the play with a cast that suits them perfectly. Finally, the perfect combination that director Jang Chang-won wanted was completed.
