In the course of economic development outlined by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev in connection with the territories liberated from occupation, one of the main directions is the transformation of these territories into a green energy zone. The goal is to provide these areas with clean green energy using high-potential renewable energy sources and, after studying the prospects for introducing green technologies, to formulate proposals. The centers newly put into operation in Zangilan are also an integral part of the work done.
As Day.Az reports with reference to AZERTAC, the Digital Control Center of the Zangilan Electric Network of the Azerishig Open Joint Stock Company (JSC) consists of two floors. On the ground floor there are two power transformers with a capacity of 2500 kV each, 35- and 0.4-kV indoor switchgears, and on the second floor there are control rooms, technical and utility rooms.
Regional Deputy Head of Azerishig OJSC Rashad Ibragimov noted that double-circuit underground cable lines were laid to supply power to the center from the 110/35/10-kilovolt Zangilan substation. According to him, the center is a project for an innovative solution for control, security and management systems that collect and process all information about the state of the power grid, as well as organize the management of equipment in a digital format. This project ensures the development of optical digital instrument transformers and new generation digital equipment systems at substations. The new generation substation ensures high accuracy of all measurements; automation makes it possible to reduce the influence of the human factor on the operation of the network, increase its reliability and reduce losses during electricity transmission. In addition, the cost of energy production and operating costs are reduced.
Consumers powered by a digital substation will be able to receive advance information online about the occurrence of power outages. Thanks to the automatic control of the digital substation, the process of integrating renewable energy sources into the network completely eliminates the occurrence of power supply interruptions. The digital substation fully ensures the construction of work in a multifunctional mode, depending on the amount of received and transmitted electricity, coordination of devices and equipment. In addition, it automatically adapts operations to the requirements of the distribution network, ensures the ability of information and technical security systems to make decisions, and integrates green energy sources into the network. A closed-type substation remotely carries out operation and control operations, eliminating the need for permanent staff.

The creation of the Sarygyshlag hydroelectric power station will prevent the release of 13 thousand tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This hydroelectric power station is one of four hydroelectric power stations of the Zangilan cycle, built by the cascade method on the Okhchuchay River. Earlier, with the participation of the head of state, three other hydroelectric power stations were put into operation – Jahangirbeyli, Shayifli and Zangilan.
Director of Green Energy LLC of AzerEnergy OJSC Ramiz Valiyev said that all work at the Sarygyshlag hydroelectric power station, built in accordance with the concept of the green energy zone, from the installation of diversion pipes, laying the foundation to the construction of the turbine hall, installation of an open distributor – carried out in full compliance with regulatory rules. Derivation pipes were laid with the retention of 35 percent of the water from the water intake, created with the construction of special devices to protect flora and fauna, and the repeated discharge of water from the pipe into the river without loss was ensured.
In the turbine hall of the Sarygyshlag hydroelectric power station, 2 eco-turbines were built that can automatically turn off when the water level in the river decreases; these turbines ensure the preservation of water in the Okhchuchay River, twice its natural flow.
A 110-kilovolt open switchgear was built at the hydroelectric power station, which performs the function of transmitting green energy produced at both the Sarygyshlag hydroelectric power station and the Shayifly hydroelectric power station into the system. Both the substation and the hydroelectric power station as a whole are equipped with digital equipment and provided with an automatic control system.
It is planned to produce up to 33 million kilowatt-hours of electricity at Sarygyshlag during the year, which will save 7.4 million cubic meters of gas and prevent the release of 13 thousand tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Consisting of 4 hydroelectric power stations, the 42-megawatt Zangilan cycle, which includes the Sarygyshlag hydroelectric power station, is the largest cascade of power plants created in the territories liberated from occupation. These brand new 4 cascade 42 MW plants, designed by local experts, operate at more than 70 percent of installed capacity.
Part of the energy produced here is spent on domestic needs, the rest is sent to the country’s energy system. This increases the energy independence of the region and contributes to environmental protection. In total, the 32 hydroelectric power plants with a capacity of 270 megawatts commissioned to date by AzerEnergy in Karabakh and Zangezur, unlike other sources of renewable energy, are dependent on weather conditions, around the clock green energy is produced.
