Archaeologists from the BAS and the History Museum in Lom have begun excavations in the Kaleto district of the Danube city, the main goal of which is to uncover an ancient building from the first century AD, which is located at a depth of about seven meters, the head of the excavations told BTA chief assistant Vladislav Zhivkov from BAS.

He specified that excavations were carried out in the Kaleto district in Lom from 1986 to 1990, then in 2015 and every year since 2018. The current excavations are being carried out according to a project won by the History Museum in Lom before the Ministry of Culture, which has allocated the funds for their realization. The building in question has been studied since 2019, and its discovery is difficult due to the great depth. It is assumed that it was built in the second half of the first century, used as a barracks for soldiers of the Roman Empire and as a stable. In the second and third centuries, there was a flourishing Roman settlement on this site, a port of the Roman Empire, which housed a customs house. At the end of the third century, the settlement was destroyed during the barbarian invasions, after which it was rebuilt again. At the same place on the bank of the Danube river there was a settlement during the time of the First Bulgarian Kingdom, under Byzantine rule and then during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. The Ottoman Empire established the Turkish hamlet of Lom in the same place. This is how several layers have accumulated, ch. assistant Vladislav Zhivkov.

During the excavations in the autumn of last year, about 400 finds were found, among them a well-preserved ancient stone cross.

According to the head of the research, 65 new archaeological sites were discovered in different places in the Lom municipality last year during a tour and searches carried out under a European-funded project won by the historical museum in the city.

The Municipality of Lom told BTA that the project of the Municipality of Lom “Increasing the tourist attractiveness of North-West Bulgaria through research, discovery, preservation and promotion of Almus – early and late Roman castle” worth BGN 6,600,000. The municipality expects this project to be financed together with two other projects for the promotion of cultural and historical heritage in the other two partner municipalities from the Regional Development Program 2021-2027.
