Few people are aware that while cricket fans are talking about it today, some greats have played over 90 matches but retired without playing in the 100th Test. Let’s look at some of the great cricketers who missed the record in the first place.
Mohammad Azharuddin who missed a match
Azharuddin is proud to have led India to 3 World Cups. He was one of the captains of the Indian team for a long time. Azharuddin played for the Indian team from 1984 to 2000. He played in 99 Tests and retired before playing in the 100th Test and missed out on that record in the prelims.
Legends who have played over 90 matches:
Gilchrist, who holds the record for the only player to hit 100 sixes in a Test match, has retired with 96 appearances. West Indies fast bowler Ambrose has played 98 matches, making batsmen scream like that. He would have been included in the list of 100 Test matches if he had played 2 more matches.
Similarly, 20 cricketers, including Gary Sobers, Sri Lanka’s Ranatunga, India’s Zaheer Khan and former India captain Dhoni, have retired from playing in the 100th Test after playing over 90 matches.
