(ANSA) – ANCONA, 03 OCT – All the activities implemented – assures the Region – were started in close collaboration between the human prevention and veterinary services and the surveillance system was strengthened, raising awareness among hospital and local doctors, General practitioners and pediatricians for the identification of patients with clinical criteria compatible with dengue virus infection.
All cases were investigated and reported on the surveillance platform for vector-borne diseases established at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità. The regional reference laboratory, the Virology Service of the Marche University Hospital, carried out a timely analysis of the samples for the definition of cases and is proceeding with the study of viral sequences, to determine the possible chain of transmission of the disease.
Furthermore, mosquito traps were placed to study the size of the mosquito population and the degree of infectivity in specific areas of Fano. As communicated by the Umbria Marche Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute, the latest captures did not highlight the presence of viruses in the captured mosquitoes, as had instead been detected in the previous days. Disinfestation activities have been carried out in the city area and a new intervention is expected in the next few days as indicated in these cases by the National Arbovirus Plan. As per practice, the Regional Blood Center of the Marche Region has indicated that, in the case of blood donation, both for donors from Fano and for those who have been in Fano even for a few hours, the Dengue test is carried out. 438 checks were carried out on residents of Fano and 238 on people who passed through the city. The results are all negative.
The Fano event is part of the European Mediterranean basin in which the Dengue virus is transmitted via the Aedes albopictus mosquito (commonly known as the Tiger mosquito), permanently present in much of Europe and autochthonous transmission events in Europe are described annually starting from 2010. Last year in Italy there were two outbreaks of indigenous Dengue in Lombardy and Lazio.
As always in these cases, the collaboration of the population is important, in order to adopt appropriate measures to protect the population itself and to limit the circulation of vectors. The AST of Pesaro Urbino, in collaboration with the Vector Center of the Zooprophylactic Institute of Umbria and Marche and the Municipality of Fano, has started a specific working group for communication activities at a territorial level. A collaboration is underway with the Ministry of Health and the Istituto Superiore di Sanità to evaluate the progress of the epidemic outbreak. (HANDLE).
