The announcement was made Wednesday evening following the vote of the members of the organization, meeting in congress until Friday in Cordoba, in the south of Spain.
Marrakech, whose medina has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 1985, won the vote against the Portuguese city Angra do Heroísmo.
The ocher city will thus succeed Cordoba, which is currently bringing together, for the 18th edition of the OWHC world congress, some 75 cities and 34 mayors from the four corners of the world, according to the Spanish press.
Founded on the occasion of the first meeting of World Heritage Cities held in Quebec (Canada) in 1991, the Organization of World Heritage Cities was officially constituted on September 8, 1993 in Fez to serve as a network for sharing expertise and good practices for the urban management of registered sites, representing more than 200 cities which have at least one declared UNESCO World Heritage site.
The organization constitutes a unique exchange platform, bringing together political leaders and professionals dedicated to the preservation of historic cities, in particular those inscribed on the World Heritage List.
Each member city is represented within the OWHC by its mayor, with the active participation of municipal elected officials and heritage managers.
