The Harju County Court on Monday set bail for Aivo Peterson, accused of treason, of 150,000 euros. After paying this amount, Peterson will be able to be released and remain free during the trial, BNS reports, citing the content of Rus.Postimees.
Peterson asked to be allowed to go home with an electronic monitoring device (electronic bracelet), but the court denied this request. However, he will be able to be released before his trial if he posts bail of 150,000 euros.
The judge noted that Peterson’s lawyer revealed difficulties in his family life because of his time in custody. In particular, his relationship with his child deteriorated. The court recognized that it is difficult, in such conditions, to maintain a trusting relationship in the family.
If Peterson is released, he will be prohibited from leaving his residence.
Dmitry Rootsi and Andrei Andronov, who are charged with high treason along with Peterson, also petitioned for release, but the court rejected their requests.
The State Prosecutor’s Office accuses Ivo Peterson and Dmitry Rootsi of high treason, and Andrei Andronov of non-violent activity against the republic.
Prosecutor Triinu Olev said at the trial that Peterson, in addition to participating in the Koos movement, planned to create a civil defense unit. He then chose people who did not trust the Estonian authorities and who were allowed to have an army. According to Olev, Peterson wanted to create a group similar to those working in the Donbass in Ukraine. Such groups look like humanitarian groups outwardly, but in reality they work for the interests of Russia.
The prosecutor’s office accuses Andrei Andronov of helping to organize Peterson’s trip to Ukrainian territories in Ukraine and arranging his appearances on Russian television channels, where Peterson expressed pro-Russian views.
Dmitry Rootsi, according to the prosecution, established connections with Russian agents in 2022. Peterson and Rootsi agreed with them regarding joint activities aimed at Estonia. Rootsey also acted as an intermediary between Peterson and Russian intelligence agencies.
Prosecutors allege that Rootsi asked Russian agents to finance Koos’ movement to ensure his success in the parliamentary elections last March.
