BOLZANO. The voting reform in conduct is law. Bolzano applauds. Trento the bowl. Marco Galateo (FdI), school councilor and vice-president of the provincial council, says that respect must be shown to teachers and classmates: «That’s good. We are awaiting the ministerial provision, as soon as it arrives we will implement it entirely and immediately also in the province of Bolzano”. The superintendent – Vincenzo Gullotta – says that he is awaiting news from the ministry on the application.
Trento, however, opposes it. Thus the vice-president of the Province and councilor for education, Francesca Gerosa (FdI): «We will not implement the reform, we must educate not sanction».
Here’s what changes.
In primary school, synthetic judgments return, from excellent to insufficient. In middle school and high school with a 5 in “behavior”, you will automatically fail. In high school, anyone who gets a full 6 will receive an educational debt and will have to present an essay at the end of August to move on to the following year. The real watershed for high school students, in view of the final exam, is the 8 in conduct. If you do not exceed this threshold, you can lose up to 3 school credit points on your card. For the Minister of Education Giuseppe Valditara «the reform of voting in conduct restores the importance of individual responsibility, gives centrality to respect for people and public goods and restores authority to teachers».
Etiquette in line with Rome.
Galateo is online. «Introducing criteria of merit that can help bring the role of the teacher – the first representative of the public administration and in the life of a citizen – back to the center of the respect of the whole society – will certainly be useful to stop the cultural degradation that rages in some pockets of our society. At school you must show respect to teachers as well as classmates. I am sure that the innovation will bring great added value to future generations. As soon as the ministerial measure arrives we will implement it immediately and entirely in the province of Bolzano too.”
Gerosa: recover, don’t punish.
«The national system – explains Gerosa – talks about failure for a 5 in conduct, but the real issue is to get the kids back, also because failure does not solve the problem. Bullying and violence at school are known and should not be underestimated, but at Trentino level the focus aims to find a way to inflexibly enforce the rules of coexistence, in order to train people who have their own behavior in every situation, even outside school spaces.”
Fontana: the revolution is on the 8th.
«The real revolution is the 8 in conduct which can create problems for the Maturity». Marco Fontanaregional president of the National Association of Principals (ANP) and director of the Battisti Institute, goes into detail about the reform. «With poor conduct, the year is repeated both in middle school and in high school. Let’s say that already in 2007 the new student statute decreed failure with a 5. The novelty lies in the automatism. Previously the class council could make exceptions, now it will no longer be able to do so. In high school, the student with a full 6 in conduct will receive an educational debt and will be asked to use the summer to write a paper on the topics of “Active and supportive citizenship”, to be discussed together with the teachers. Admission to the next class will depend on the positive outcome of the interview. The 8 in conduct is – as mentioned – the real revolution. If you do not exceed this threshold, you can lose up to 3 credit points on your card. This is a score that is included in the Maturity grade which affects the student’s future education.” Another thing is the suspensions. «If they are longer than 2 days they involve actions in favor of the community. We’re talking – he closes – about extracurricular commitment.”
SJR: the wrong way.
Disappointment in the boys of the Südtiroler Jugendring. «Failed with a 5 and sent back to September with a 6. We are on the wrong path». Tanja Rainer, president of the SJR is with us. «When young people behave badly it means that society has a problem. For this reason, rather than punishing, we must analyse, understand and address the causes of behavior that is symptomatic of a disorder. Relying only on punishments will not lead to any improvement. Instead of an authoritarian approach we should place more emphasis on prevention and involving young people in public life. Society as a whole is co-responsible for their well-being.”
