Speaking at a meeting on women’s rights in Afghanistan, co-organized by Germany, the Netherlands, Canada and Australia, the minister also noted that the debate on the situation in this country of Central Asia should not be diverted for the benefit of a debate on the role of women in Islam.
“As a Muslim nation, Morocco firmly believes that the values of Islam are perfectly compatible with universal human rights, including women’s rights,” he maintained, noting that the Kingdom also believes that equality, which is a universal principle rooted in justice and dignity, transcends cultural boundaries.
In his intervention during this meeting held on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, in the presence of several ministers and UN officials, Mr. Bourita expressed Morocco’s commitment to protect and promote women’s rights.
“We are here today to reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that the human rights of every woman and girl are respected, everywhere,” he said, adding that any country that excludes women in education and public life, hinders its own progress and reduces the possibilities for lasting peace and growth.
“No country has a monopoly on gender equality and women’s rights, but all nations have an obligation to uphold them,” he said.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans living abroad also indicated that in matters of human rights, Morocco always favors the virtues of dialogue and cooperation, observing that “this doctrine is also valid for the situation of women in Afghanistan”.
