The German Television Prize is considered one of the most important prizes in the TV industry. Sonja Zietlow, however, has a mixed relationship with the award.

A few weeks ago, Sonja Zietlow was awarded the German Television Prize. In September, the presenter received the trophy in the category “Best Moderation/Individual Achievement in Entertainment” for her program “The Traitors – Trust Nobody!” awarded. The RTL format ran for the first time last year.

In an interview with the German Press Agency, however, she revealed: “I’m not the biggest fan of the German Television Award,” said Sonja Zietlow. “Sometimes formats are awarded just because they are well-made television. In contrast, Jungle gets its first television award after 20 years, even though it is really the most successful format of the last 20 years.”

“I’m a star – get me out of here!” was shown on TV for the first time in 2004. The jungle camp was successful from the start. But it wasn’t until seven years after the first season that the format was nominated for a television award, but had to admit defeat to the Eurovision Song Contest.

It was not until 2023, almost 20 years after the start of “I’m a Star – Get Me Out of Here!”, that the show won its first television award. “I still haven’t understood that to this day. That’s a kick in the ass for Dirk Bach, for me and for Daniel Hartwich. We made fantastic television for 20 years, at least a lot of people wanted to see it over the years,” said Zietlow. The 56-year-old has been moderating the jungle camp since the first episode. First with Dirk Bach, then with Daniel Hartwich, and since 2023 with Jan Köppen.

“The Traitors – Trust No One!” however, was taken into account immediately. After the first season, Sonja Zietlow received the nomination – and ultimately the trophy. “I don’t want to downplay the award at all because I know how happy the whole team was about it and how the format deserved it.” The second season of the format starts on Thursday.
