“The city of Rabat, listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, has exceptional cultural capital of universal value, combined with urban development promoting cultural and educational heritage,” said Mr. Addahre in a statement to the MAP.
Rabat, he said, “is today recognized for its infrastructures and cultural activities which constitute a real lever contributing to the construction of a Morocco of the future, anchored in its African roots and focused on interaction with the world and its new realities.
Ambassador Addahre cited in this regard among the cultural infrastructures of the capital, the Mohammed VI Museum of modern and contemporary art, the Mohammed V theater, the great theater of Rabat, “recognized as one of the most beautiful in the world ” and the national library of the Kingdom.
“The supreme consecration announced today is therefore a continuation of the proclamation of the city of Rabat as African capital of culture for the year 2022-2023, the main objective of which was to highlight the wealth and cultural and civilizational diversity of Africa, as well as the deep human and cultural ties that unite the countries of the continent,” he said.
He noted that “the variation of the Royal vision has succeeded in making this magnificent city a crossroads of world cultures”, recalling the organization in Rabat in December 2022 of the 17th session of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage which had , given the resounding success that accompanied it, foreshadowed this magnificent consecration.”
UNESCO, it will be recalled, announced this Tuesday the designation of the city of Rabat as World Book Capital 2026.
The director general of the UN organization, Audrey Azoulay, welcomed this recognition, stressing that “Rabat is an important cultural crossroads where books contribute to the transmission of knowledge and the arts in all their diversity”.
“UNESCO and the World Book Capital Advisory Committee have recognized Rabat for its clear commitment to the development of literature, the empowerment of women and young people through reading and the fight against illiteracy, particularly in less advantaged communities,” she underlined in a press release.
The year of celebration of Rabat as the world book capital will begin on April 23, 2026 on the occasion of World Book and Copyright Day, specifies UNESCO.
