The movie “Rita” by Jayro Bustamante was selected for represent Guatemala at the 2025 Goya Awardsgranted by the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain. The film was nominated for Guatemalan Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciencesthis being the second time that she has been selected to represent our country in the category of «Best Ibero-American Film».
The film premiered in Guatemalan theaters on August 8 and has been in theaters for two months since then, positioning itself as one of the favorite options among the Guatemalan public. “Rita” has a cast of renowned actresses and actors who have worked on other Jayro Bustamante projects, but its protagonists are young Guatemalans from different parts of the country, some of them being their first time acting. Although its selection for the Goya Awards does not guarantee its nomination as a candidate film for the award, we are sure that it will be positioned as one of the favorites.
If you haven’t seen it yet, the film tells the story of a 13-year-old girl who runs away from home to get away from her violent father. After some time living with a person who helps her, she is placed in a State safe house. There, along with other girls, she will plan a new escape in search of freedom, facing the difficult circumstances that surround her.
Rita’s recognitions since her world premiere
The film, which is the first co-production between Hollywood and Guatemala, “spread its wings” in July, during its world premiere at the 28th Fantasia International Film Festival in Canada, where it won the award for Best Cinematography.
Recently, after its premiere at the National Theater, the film was selected to represent the country at the Colibrí Film Awards, one of the most prestigious awards in the film industry in Ecuador. In this award, Rita was also nominated for the category of “Best Ibero-American Film.”
Added to these achievements is his recent selection to represent Guatemala at the Goya Awards, the most prestigious awards in Spanish cinema.

The Goya Awards are organized annually by the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences.
