UNICEF on the share of climate finance targeting children“/>
Over the past 17 years, only 2.4% of climate finance from vertical funds has gone to children.
As Day.Az reports with reference to Trend, this was stated by the UNICEF regional adviser for Europe and Central Asia on sustainable development and climate issues Maria Osbeck at the event “National High-Level Expert Dialogue on Climate Change and Children” at ADA University as part of Baku Climate Action Week.
“Over the past 17 years, only 2.4% of climate finance from vertical funds has gone to children. This is certainly a signal that the new climate finance target must take children into account,” she said.
Osbeck mentioned that 160 million children in Europe and Central Asia, including EU countries, are classified as highly or moderately vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
“The environment and climate change are three of the top five risk factors for poor health in children under five,” she added.
It should be noted that Climate Action Week runs from September 30 to October 4, 2024 and is being held in Baku for the first time.
The event will form the basis of the climate agenda ahead of COP29 in Baku in November.
Climate Action Week brings together key stakeholders from a range of sectors such as politics, finance, trade, investment, science, arts, culture, civil society and media.
The first half of the week (September 30 – October 2) is dedicated to climate solutions involving government agencies, academia and the private sector. In the second half (October 3-4), the emphasis will be on science, education, art, culture and other sectors.
As part of climate week, many events are organized in different parts of the city.
