Rebel France once again hit by sexist and sexual violence. Isère MP Hugo Prévost has been excluded from the France Insoumise (LFI) group in the National Assembly for “serious acts of a sexual nature which could constitute criminal offences”, the group announced on Tuesday.

“Meeting on 8 October 2024, in accordance with the principles of the charter signed by the LFI-NFP candidates for the legislative elections who undertake to “defend feminist values and fight sexist and sexual violence wherever it is found”, the MP The LFI Group -NFP has ruled on the exclusion of MP Hugo Prevost,” he announced in a press release on Tuesday evening.

The group was contacted on September 23 by the Vigilance Committee against sexist and sexual violence (CVSS) of La France insoumise “regarding serious acts of a sexual nature which could constitute criminal offences, accused of the deputy before his election”. The 25-year-old elected official from Isère was interviewed on 2 October by a delegation of rebels. “From this hearing it emerged, as well as from elements of the dossier compiled by the CVSS in support of various testimonies, that the gravity of the disputed facts and their systemic nature required contacting the parliamentary group so that it could impose a sanction”, explained the group . It underlines that this decision can never “replace” a court decision and “reaffirms its constant commitment to the fight against sexist and sexual violence”.

“A desire for sexual control”

Insoumise’s France was shaken at the end of 2022 by the story of the deputy Adrien Quatennens, convicted of domestic violence, who entered the benches of the National Assembly just a month after his conviction. The LFI group had temporarily excluded him for four months, but several members of the movement had denounced his return.

The Student Union, co-founded by Hugo Prévost, reports for its part in a long press release that it has collected “testimonies” denouncing “acts of moral and sexual harassment, patterns of predation, serious acts of a sexual nature that are criminally reprehensible”. These facts “extend for a period from 2020 to 2024 and would have continued after the departure of Hugo Prevost from the national team (…) in March”, adds the student organization which denounces “a desire for sexual and political control over women” . The organization adds that “most of the facts (…) had been known to some for several months or even several years.” He demands that “justice be done” and urges the deputy to “resign from his mandate”.
